CQtober 2024 Seam 8, Wheatear Stitch
#CQtober2024
Seam 8 is Wheatear (aka Wheat Ear, or Wheat) Stitch. I have stitched it a couple of times in the past, but the only other photos I could find of it were on my first crazy quilt, the Cream and White CQ.
These are all from that first Cream and White Crazy Quilt. The bottom photo is the very first time I ever stitched it. There was one more seam, but I don't have a good photo of it. These are all the regular wheatear stitch. It's not a hard stitch, but it is a little more involved, and so I think it gets overlooked.
This variation has two "ears" coming off. The effect is striking and I really love this stitch!
Once I completed it, I went back and added green lazy daisies to the end of each long "ear". In a surprise twist, I really hated them, and so after stitching up nearly the entire seam on one side, I went back and cut them all out. It's rare that I do that, so a bit shocking!
The result is that I am SO much happier with the seam left as is. It really is a showstopper!
I was concerned that having a seam with no other additions to it would look out of place with the rest of the seams. But once I had a chance to look at it altogether, it worked beautifully. And now I know that I can add a few other standalone seams to this project!
Happy Stitching!
